I was standing at a table occupied by 6 diners at the restaurant a few nights ago opening a bottle of wine. No biggie. BUT, then the cork decided to be an asshole. And break 3 times into 3 small crumbly pieces. I kept going back in with my trusty corkscrew, determined. I would NOT let that cork fall in the bottle. And I somehow managed to get the last tiny bit of cork out of the neck of the bottle like a champ. I also managed to sweat like an Olympic athlete as well. I had to take a cloth and actually wipe my brow. That happened.
So, I thought I would take a moment to profess my love for my corkscrew. It’s cheap and ain’t anything special but I sure do love it. It’s the Pulltap’s “waiter’s corkscrew”. You can get these at most liquor stores/Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s, etc for under $10. They are light and efficient and I always have one in my purse. I have other corkscrews, mostly for show and to feel fancy shmance, but this is my tried and true companion.
A double lever hinge is important people! And that teflon-coated spiral makes for an easy, smooth entry. Because it’s both sharp and light it makes it possible for me to retrieve itty bitty pieces of cork that have decided to be annoying without pushing them into the bottle.
Most sommeliers and waiters I know prefer Pulltap’s. I have proof! While dining at The Bazaar last night, guess what Maxwell- our fantastical sommelier- pulled out of his pocket to open our wine?
