The LA neighborhood food and drink crawl continues! Claire and I touched down in WeHo then we rolled over to Venice for a Joy the Baker style afternoon. I paired a wine to the essence of the Venice that Joy lives in, the way she sees it. And she made some freaking incredible cornmeal and chive waffles with a fried egg and salsa on top. I mean, come on!
Wine: Olivier Lemasson “Pow Blop Wizz” (currently sold out in LA. sorry to be such a tease! anyone know if it’s available in NYC?)
My friend Bisquite PowerPoppin is to thank for the title of this post. If you don’t speak Bizzy, let me translate: 2012 Breakfast! I ate one with a bunch of amazing people. And my dear friend Joy did all the cookin’! I sure do love me some Joy Food.
There were instant photos, gemstones and wooden eggs.
Momofuku cereal milk. For general sipping, coffee additions or waffle palate cleanser.
There was bacon, of course. And this foxy little wine.
I’ve mentionedPhilipe Bornard on the blog before. This Jura winemaker is one you need to know about! Drink his wine. Just do it. This delicious 100% chardonnay bubbly is now maybe in my top 10 wines perfectly suited for daytime wine consumption/brunch. ‘Cause that’s a list I keep, best believe.
And look- another sunset! It’ll be 2013 before we know it…
I spent the weekend in Palm Springs for Homefries U with some of my fellow podcasters from Homefries media and a couple dozen wonderful ladies and dapper gent. Joy and Tracy were the headliners, but I was there to talk about all things bubbly wine (and paint my nails and make friendship bracelets. Duh.)
Alison is pretty! So is the pink pet nat she’s holding.
After my wine schtuff, Nathan did a little ditty on gin! Nothing takes you from daylight hours into the evening like a chilled shot (ahem- for sipping) of Bols Genever.
Ladies- amazing nails. Seriously. Mad props.
A pretty stellar Saturday overall! Thanks everyone for being so into the wines and into learning. Can’t wait for the next one!
PS- I was lazy and didn’t take any pictures. But, Maryam did! Thanks lady for all the iPhone footage. Maryam’s flickr page has ALL the pics from this weekend if you want to know what went down (the hatch). AND Nathan sent me all those photos of me in action up there in that collage. Gracias.
Brunch! My favorite meal ever invented. Perhaps because it is the only daytime meal where drinking is completely acceptable! My wine of choice at brunch is always and forever either rosé or bubbles. And guess what? We had both.
Last weekend, my pal Joy had some ladies over for a very civilized brunch complete with quiche, salad, a veritable strawberry fantasia and WINE. I brought Bedrock‘s 2010 Ode to Lulu. It’s a seriously lovely rosé from 120 year old mourvedre vines up in Sonoma.
Feast your eyes on this focaccia…
Yeah…
While floating on a strawberry cloud, we popped open some Francois Pinon Vouvray. Into the coupes it went! Drinking sparkling wine out of a coupe is a must do situation. Especially when one wants to feel civilized. But there is also something about a coupe that feels frivolous and tipsy and fun.
And then this happened. Fresh, and I mean right out of the fryer fresh, sour cream doughnuts with brown sugar/brown butter glaze. What? This thing basically tasted like, stay with me, a bite of fried chicken and waffles with maple syrup. Seriously. So good!
I am an official believer in doughnuts and bubbly together. But, I can’t say that this particular duo was the best pairing ever. But WHO CARES.
We sat down on the floor and feasted. Bikes, babes, bubbles and…baked goods.
Thank you Joy for such a wonderfully yummy brunch. With the friends I keep, I sure do eat well.
Miss Joy Wilson. Known by many adoring fans as, simply, Joy the Baker and known to me as one of my bestest lady friends. I also refer to her as Joy the Baker in conversation which could possibly seem weird, but I AM one of her biggest fans. So there. She is one of the [...]
My Wednesday began with mouse ears, frozen lemonade, friends and sunshine. And lots of standing in long lines that rarely ever ended up with my butt in a seat of a ride because somehow everything we wanted to ride decided to break down. After we had been standing there waiting for 45 minutes already. I [...]
This + These chicks (minus the horses!) = For the past couple of months, I’ve had my face all up in a microphone chatting away with my bestie Christina. Not so abnormal, really. Except for the fancy microphone part. BUT, the special thing about it is that we’ve been recording a podcast. A PODCAST! It’s [...]
I’ve just returned from a truly magical weekend in San Luis Obispo with some of my dearest friends. We spent our days eating, drinking, cooking, eating, soaking in tubs, drinking some more and laughing. We definitely did a lot of laughing. And taking pictures of our food. This lovely lady, Joy, is the reason we all [...]

// // This Sunday involved a heaping pile of fried chicken, mounds of cole slaw and about 200 cupcakes. It also involved a very dear friend, Joy of Joy The Baker fame. She spent many a month preparing for this special day. A day of family, friends and fans. Hers, not mine. But still…a great [...]
