The Crush: Episode 18!

by whitney on November 22, 2011

She’s all grown up. It’s graduation day. Episode 18! Now she’s gonna go off and live in London with Christina where the drinking age is 18. Fine then.

So. This week we address Thanksgiving wines (you know we had to), reveal some ugly truths about Beaujolais Nouveau, try to understand why New Zealand would want to make a drink made out of- wait for it- palm trees and watch the video of Alice Feiring stomping sagrantino grapes with her feet. AND the always stylish and globe-trotting Carmen Grape-iago is off to a very interesting location with vineyards that look like the surface of the moon!

And if you can guess correctly how many times Christina and I collectively say Beaujolais, you win a bottle of…Georges Duboeuf.

The Crush: Episode 17!

by whitney on November 15, 2011

Can you believe it? SEVENTEEN. Episode 17. It’s real. It’s happening.

High Altitude people. Not high attitude. OK- well, maybe a little. That’s why you love us! Right? Riiiiiight? OK, cool. But really- we’re chatting about the highest vineyards in the world, the best spitoon ever, all those scientific studies about whether or not red wine is good for you and micro-oxygenation. And, as per usual, a ton of other not to be missed stuff. I swear.

It’ll be the best 43 minutes of your week. All right, your DAY. Maybe. We hope.

The Crush: Episode 16!

by whitney on November 7, 2011

Episode 16! Viva España!

We couldn’t go to Spain for 10 days and not devote an ENTIRE podcast to our trip now could we? So yeah, that’s what we did.

We’re talking Cava, Priorat, vegetal water, BRUTAL wine, horse meatballs, Rioja, Txakoli, trying to speak Catalan, not even remotely figuring out Basque, one of the best food and wine pairings in recent memory and MUCHO MAS.

Me and Christina soaking up some rays in Getxo on our way to afternoon tapas of some ice cold Txakoli and fried squid with lemon. I’m currently teleporting myself back there in my brain. Right now.

The Crush: Episode 15!

by whitney on November 1, 2011

Can I hear a UNO to the CINCO? And maybe a “hip hop hooray” while you’re at it? Episode 15 is here!

We’ve got top tips for planning a wine trip in Europe, favorite hot dog wine, what beverage related books we are currently reading, all things Northwestern wine (hint, hint) and a whole bunch of other chit chat.

I’m in Barcelona right now and I’m listening to my voice from before I left. My brain is having a hard time with these time travel-esque facts!! I’m going on a solo tapas crawl now. I’ll feel much better.

A useful fact for you, perhaps? If you listen to our podcast via iPhone/iPod you can access all our shows through some great apps without having to sync it to your computer! Instacasts and Simplecasts both have our show and all the Homefries shows. Simplecasts actually just released a brand new version of their app just for the Homefries gang!

The Crush: Episode 14!

by whitney on October 26, 2011

Episode 14 is up and running!

We talk “chick beer” that “doesn’t make you bloated” and also makes us gag at the thought of it, people that are decanting wine in blenders and then we drink some Lapierre on air (hopefully with all you folks!). My favorite part of the show, naturally.

Listen in and pick up what we’re putting down, you dig?

The Crush: Episode 13!

by whitney on October 18, 2011

Episode 13. Let’s do this!

We’re chatting about weed wine, Gewurtztraminer that doesn’t suck, Lambrusco/how Pavarotti drank his, donkey meat, how to clean our wine stained teeth and why I was screaming at the top of my lungs in Griffith park the other night.

We also announce our Never Drink Alone wine that we’ll (hopefully) all drink together during next week’s podcast. It is…

2010 Lapierre “Raisins Gaulois” Gamay. Get some and drink along with me and Christina. I’ll be drinking it at 9AM when we record. Like a champ.

In Los Angeles available at Domaine LA and Lincoln Fine Wines.

The Crush: Episode 12!

by whitney on October 11, 2011

WE’RE BACK!

The long awaited 12th episode is finally ready for the soundwaves. With this episode marks the return of the show and new WEEKLY podcasts. Promise.

This week we’re talking about Olivier Cousin, wine at weddings, Hanepoot grapes, fanny packs, what VV stands for, answering listener questions and mucho more! These pictures are from the last wedding Christina and I attended together. It was in Italy. We had a love affair with some Prosecco and blood orange juice. And no, that is not the wedding cake they are cutting. That is the wedding VEAL.

Bits & Bubbles

by whitney on September 26, 2011

I spent the weekend in Palm Springs for Homefries U with some of my fellow podcasters from Homefries media and a couple dozen wonderful ladies and dapper gent. Joy and Tracy were the headliners, but I was there to talk about all things bubbly wine (and paint my nails and make friendship bracelets. Duh.)

I brought 4 wines with me from Domaine LA. And one really pink, amazing vintage dress from Shareen. I wanted to share 4 distinctly different styles of sparkling wine that could all be had for under $20. We tasted drank: German Gilabert Cava, Sommariva Prosecco, La Grange Tiphaine “Rosa Rose Rosam” and Grotta del Sole Gragnano.

Alison is pretty! So is the pink pet nat she’s holding.

After my wine schtuff, Nathan did a little ditty on gin! Nothing takes you from daylight hours into the evening like a chilled shot (ahem- for sipping) of Bols Genever.

Ladies- amazing nails. Seriously. Mad props.

A pretty stellar Saturday overall! Thanks everyone for being so into the wines and into learning. Can’t wait for the next one!

PS- I was lazy and didn’t take any pictures. But, Maryam did! Thanks lady for all the iPhone footage. Maryam’s flickr page has ALL the pics from this weekend if you want to know what went down (the hatch). AND Nathan sent me all those photos of me in action up there in that collage. Gracias.

The Crush: Episode 11

by whitney on September 9, 2011

Episode 11. It’s happening. It already happened. Well, for me at least. Anyway, it’s ready for you to experience!

Christina and I catch up on the rest of her Cali trip after she left me and Los Angeles in the dust. We gossip like total chicks about these winemaker dudes….

Making wine is sexy people. Get with it! By the way- Christina and I still plan on producing a calendar of fantastically amazing looking wine peeps, with proceeds going to charity. Perhaps, these two could be candidates?

OK- so, back to the program. We also talk about how we store our wine and dream about our ultimate cellars, how to pronounce meritage and what hell that even is, what a lady at a crappy California tasting room told Christina they added to their wines (!) and a 101 on all things German wein. And a whole buncha other stuff!

We had a special guest writing our clues for our Where in the World is Carmen Grapeiego segment- our dear German friend Soren.

I know he’ll hate me for posting this picture! But it’s really, truly my favorite.

PS- pectoraux!!

Episode 10 of The Crush

by whitney on August 24, 2011

T-E-N.

Ten, ten, TEN.

I can’t believe we’ve recorded 10 episodes already. The latest episode is up and this is a special one guys! We recorded this when Christina was in LA. So, we were actually able to record in the SAME ROOM. I know. Crazy.

You can hear what our voices sound like after dancing into the wee hours of the night at Harvard & Stone and getting about 5 hours of sleep. Also peep one of my new tattoos. And find out if Christina can tell the difference between a Pinot Grigio from a TetraPak and one from a bottle when we get down with a little blind tasting action. Overall, this is a good one! I swear.

It’s safe to say we had a wonderful time while Christina was in town.

Thanks Marisa Q for the pretty pics of the two of us! And thanks to our parents. For getting us braces.
