Red, White & Pink

by whit on July 6, 2011

The 4th day of the 7th month- otherwise known to me as 3 days before my birthday. Or, the day when the excuse to have a weeklong party begins! I decided to kick off the festivities in my old home of New York City to celebrate with friends and drink a lot of delicious things.

A rooftop in Brooklyn + old pals + fireworks + bottles from Frankly Wines + a grill full of hot dogs = YES!

Way to work that red dress Logan!

That wine right there is Binner‘s 2009 “Saveurs” Alsatian white blend which was smashing with a mountain style raw goat’s milk cheese from Vermont that I can’t remember the name of for the life of me. Anyway- the games had officially begun!

Next up was the Chateau Musar 2009 cinsault rosé. What up my Lebanese peoples! Nice to have you with me on America’s Bday. Odd. But yet, so right.

In other news- it took 3 college educated women 45 minutes to get a small grill with “easy lighting” charcoal to stay lit and actually cook food. A wine bag, cardboard insert and our collective pride was harmed in the making of this fire.

While doing this we gazed over at the bumping roof party nearby and gave them the stink eye for having a grill that had actual FLAMES. Fine, just hang out and eat your watermelon while we are over here SUFFERING.

Oh wait- we figured it out. Teehee. You guys are nice! Happy 4th!

So we had success. Finally! The earthy, savory Musar rosé was pretty great with these grilled and super smoky dogs. Smoky because we put the the lid on the damn grill and smoked the crap out of them. We were hungry. And impatient.

More friends arrived, the sun began to set (countdown to fireworks time!) and another bottle was opened.

It was time for the 2009 La Ferme des Sept Lunes “Glou.” This sans soufre (without the addition of SO2) syrah from the Rhone was delicious. Delicious, I say! We chilled it down quite a bit as per Christy Frank’s instructions and it was pretty great. The favorite of the evening and a perfect, fun BBQ wine.

Now is the part where I share sky pictures. The epic sunset that we were lucky enough to witness is just too beautiful not to show.

And as every night should end- in a blurry and glorious blaze of fireworks.

I won’t lie, I have about as much luck starting a grill as you girls had. That’s why I make my husband light the fire, then stand back while I grill with one hand and consume epic amounts of wine with the other. Still, you totally have me beat with those amazing sunset photos. Happy 4th of July (and happy birthday!)! :)

The sunset pics are gorgeous. I have a bottle of that Binner ‘Saveurs’ in my fridge waiting to be drunk! Need to get me some goats cheese to go with it. I polished off bottle number 1 of the Breton La Dillatente in honour of your birthday on Thurs night, and then finished off bottle number 2 (with more help this time) last night with friends-it was a big hit! xx
