For Christmas last year, I gave my friend Corey a beer making kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop. On May 31, 2011 he decided to finally get to brewing. For crying out loud man, what have you been waiting for??
Since he’s a lover of IPA’s, I got Corey the “Everyday IPA” kit (not the Chestnut Brown pictured above). In the kit you get: a 1 gallon glass fermenter, an airlock, tubing, a thermometer, a tubing clamp, packet of sanitizer and a blowoff attachment. Those items kind of sound like they could be Star Wars memorabilia, gynecological instruments or possibly sex toys, I don’t know which. In any case, with those “tools” you also get a malted barley blend, some hops and yeast.
I asked Corey to document the home beer brewing process for me and all of you to see how it’s done! So, he tweeted his step by step brew journey with pictures. Here we go:
Making some IPA. Mashing the grain.
Mashing out. Constantly stirring. This smells so good.
Heating an additional 4 quarts of water for later use.
Sanitizing everything with C-Brite.
Straining the mash and running the boiling 4 quarts of water to extract the “wort” (young beer).
Bringing the wort up to a boil.
Columbus hops in. Looks like rabbit poo. [editor's note: totally!!]
Ice bath cool down.
In the fermentation jug. Yeast added. Won’t tweet about this shit for two weeks cuz that’s how long it’ll stay standing.
Thank you for those truly eloquent and elaborate descriptions, Mr. Hernandez. So ya’ll, check back here in a few weeks to see how the finished product turned out.
If you want to get in on this whole making beer at home trend, check out Brooklyn Brew Shop’s other kits. Grapefruit Honey Ale, Rose-Cheeked Blonde and Peanut Butter Porter- I see you!! BHMF readers Maretta and Sharon, who are home brewers (I’ve tasted their creations and they are legit!), also tipped me off to a great shop in LA for all your brewing needs- Eagle Rock Home Brewing Supply. They also have a location in Culver City. So, people. Who’s in? Let’s do this!
